Today's Word

1 Timothy 5:4

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, they must first learn to show godliness to their own family and repay their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God.
1 Timothy 5:4 (Berean Standard Bible)

Reflection

Before Paul hands the care of a widow to the church, he looks first at her family. If she has children or grandchildren, let them practice godliness at home. Do not skip the care close at hand and escape into wider good deeds.

The words "first... to their own family" carry weight. Faith does not begin far away. The plain care of a parent we face each day, of an elder growing old, is where faith is practiced. As the verse puts it, this is something to learn — care is not inborn but acquired.

Think of someone aging beside you today. A short message asking how they are may come before any distant act of kindness.
