Today's Word
1 Timothy 5:8
“If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
Reflection
The force of this verse is startling. The one who does not provide for his relatives, especially his own household, is called someone who has denied the faith. It confronts the contradiction of confessing faith with the lips while turning away from the nearest responsibility.
Provision is not abstract but concrete — meals, medicine, a phone call, time. It is easy to be good from a distance, hard to steadily care for the family we brush against every day. This verse sees the truth of faith revealed precisely there.
Received only as duty, care feels heavy. But recall the care you yourself were given, and its texture changes. For one person in your charge today, carry out one small act of care you have been putting off.
