Colossians 3:18-19
“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.”
Reflection
Paul speaks to wives and to husbands alike. He lays the weight on no single side. To wives, submission; to husbands, love — but to husbands he adds a warning: do not be harsh. Authority, he makes clear, carries responsibility.
The phrase "as is fitting in the Lord" holds up both sides. This is not one person pressing down on another, but two people standing before the Lord and treating each other from there. In that place, harshness has no ground to stand on.
Consider the authority you hold in a close relationship today. Is it used to build the other up, or to press them down? Love and harshness are divided by a single sheet of paper.
