Deuteronomy 5:16

Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
Deuteronomy 5:16 (Berean Standard Bible)

Reflection

Honoring father and mother is the first command toward people within the Ten Commandments. Right after the place turned toward heaven comes the place turned toward the two who brought you into the world. It shows that faith begins in the nearest relationships.

Honor does not mean the feeling must always be warm. Relationships with parents are rarely simple, and some carry wounds. Even so, this command asks you to choose respect first in posture and action, rather than waiting for the heart to ripen.

Reach out to a parent with something brief today. It need not be a grand reconciliation. A word asking how they are, a single memory of gratitude, is enough to give honor a concrete shape.
