Proverbs 1:8

Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake the teaching of your mother.
Proverbs 1:8 (Berean Standard Bible)

Reflection

A father's instruction and a mother's teaching stand side by side. Neither tips the scale. The old wisdom packed into this short line is that a person grows whole only when the word that corrects and the teaching that holds are present together.

"Do not forsake" assumes there will be times you want to leave that teaching behind. Growing up, there is a season when a parent's words feel stifling. This verse does not deny that feeling. It only asks you not to forget that within the guidance you took for granted, there was a path.

Bring to mind someone's teaching today. A single line that felt like nagging when you received it may, in hindsight, have been the thing that protected you. And the words you pass to someone else may one day become that line too.
