Proverbs 10:1
“The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother.”
Reflection
Proverbs does not leave wisdom and folly as abstractions. It sets them down at a family table, naming what makes a father smile and what makes a mother sigh. A parent's heart is moved less by a child's circumstances than by a child's character, and this short line presses on exactly that nerve.
The wisdom here is not grades or success. It is the bent of a person who can tell right from wrong and hold their place. A parent's joy in such a child is not pride but relief. And the grief that folly brings is not resentment but the weight that love agrees to carry.
If you sit in the place of a child today, pause and remember that someone's joy and worry rise and fall because of you. If you sit in the place of a parent, pray less for your child's achievements and more for the grain of their heart.
