Today's Word
Romans 5:5
“And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.”
Reflection
To say hope does not disappoint assumes we already know the sting of expecting and being let down. When what we longed for misses, we feel foolish. Paul knows that feeling, and still writes of a hope that does not collapse.
That hope holds not because our temperament is strong, but because God's love has been poured into our hearts. Poured carries the sense of being filled to overflowing. This is not optimism squeezed out of ourselves but love that flows in from beyond and pools within.
If a missed expectation made your heart shrink today, look at where your hope is rooted. Hope hung on circumstances sways when circumstances do. Hope touched by poured-out love holds from a place deeper than circumstance.
