Today's Word
Proverbs 27:9
“Oil and incense bring joy to the heart, and the counsel of a friend is sweetness to the soul.”
Reflection
As oil and incense bring joy to the heart, so the heartfelt counsel of a friend is sweet. Not pleasant-sounding words, but faithful counsel. Advice from a sincere heart is sometimes bitter yet fragrant.
Faithful counsel doesn't come from just anyone. There must be a heart that cherishes you for even an uncomfortable word to be offered. To be able to hear such counsel means such a friend is near.
On a day you'd rather avoid advice because the bitter word grates, look at where the word comes from. The counsel of one who cherishes you shapes the heart like oil and incense.
