Today's Word
Matthew 22:39
“And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
Reflection
"Love your neighbor as yourself." The standard of love is "as yourself." Treat your neighbor with the same care you give to looking after yourself. Not abstract love, but the familiar measure of self-care.
This command follows the love of God, joined by "like it." The love directed upward and the love directed sideways are not separate. To love a neighbor touches on loving Him.
On a day you're at a loss whom to love and how, recall the way you treat yourself. To tend one person beside you as you tend yourself is the nearest start of love.
